MidAtlantic Bulldog Rescue knows that surrendering your dog is a very, very difficult decision. Perhaps you got your dog a short time ago and realize you don’t have the time to properly care for him. Your dog may have been a part of your life for many years but as your circumstances have changed, you now know that owning a dog isn’t the right thing for you anymore or perhaps financially you are unable to care for your dog at this time or medical issues are too overwhelming. Surrendering your dog to MABDR, another rescue group or animal shelter is an incredibly difficult decision but sometimes, it is the only one to make.
Before you consider surrendering your dog, you should ask yourself a few questions:
- Do I have the time, energy and resources to provide adequate care to the dog?
- Does my schedule permit me to spend quality time with my dog every single day?
- Is my dog not behaving well because I don’t have or want to spend time on basic behavior training?
- Do I have young children and don’t have the time or desire to show them proper dog handling techniques?
- Has my health taken a drastic turn and because of it, I’m not able to walk and socialize my dog?
These are just some things to consider when making the difficult decision to surrender your dog. If you realize that your dog would be better cared for in a rescue group and eventually, with a new owner, perhaps the time has come to surrender your dog.
If you choose to surrender your dog to MABDR you will be asked to complete a surrender contract. This legally binding contract gives full ownership of the dog to MABDR. This allows us to provide veterinary care and down the road, legally adopt out the dog to a carefully pre screened ‘forever’ home.
MABDR will take on full legal and ethical ownership and responsibility for your dog. All of our rescue dogs are vetted, microchipped, neutered/spayed, brought up to date on vaccinations (as necessary) and put on heartworm prevention (where necessary) before being placed for adoption.
Donations at time of surrender are ALWAYS appreciated. Vetting costs for almost all dogs that come into our care run into the thousands — per dog. Your dog will also appreciate it if you surrender him with all of his belongings, including bed, leash, harness, toys and a supply of food, to make his transition to foster care an easier one. Finally, copies of vet records are always helpful to allow us and the adoptive home make necessary and important decisions regarding the dogs future care.
If you have additional questions about surrendering your dog, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to answer your questions and help you make the best decision for your dog.
